Big L
We got this - The Heist - Day One '99

The first (solo) release after his tragic death in february this year. Big L was a true metaphor master and very talented MC, also on this 12".

The first track, 'We Got This', is produced by '?', either they really don't know who it was or the person wants to stay anonymous, 'cause the beat is kinda ? also. After listening to it a few times, it even gets nicer. It has a little Busta Rhymes feeling to it. The chorus is a bit irritating to me, what really makes the track fat are L's lyrics: 'What's this motherfucking rap game without L? / that's like: jewels without ice / that's like China without rice / or the Holy Bible without Christ / or the Bulls without Mike / or crack heads without pipes'.

The second song 'The Heist' is proof of L's story telling qualities. His wife is seen in a hotel with some dudes, and Big L and his crew are gonna get 'em. With sound effects and all! Fat. The beat, produced by himself and Rondell is nice, but a Showbiz, Lord Finesse or Diamond beat would've made it more perfect.

Last track 'Day one '99' is a part of Big L/AG's live show in Amsterdam, The Netherlands this year (one af his last). Big L is rippin' shit on there, 'Ah fuck it, I drop the '99 version of this shit!' starting with a typical L begin, 'Check it!', a very nice piece of vinyl! It's a pity though they didn't let AG finish, I remember he kicked some tight lyrics on there too.

All-in-all, a 12" you should have! Nice detail, the cover of the piece contains a picture of Big L which was made by AQ of Art 12!!

DTF, once again, reminiscing; Damn, why Big L?, I bumped into him at the evening of his Amsterdam show, and all I could say was, "Thanks man, thanks!". Big L: "Nah man, thank you!". May he rest in peace, one love.

P.s.
I saw a lady at the Fat beats Party with Big L and AG earlier this year who was taping the whole show, if somebody out there can tell me her name and number, I wanna have that tape!!
